As BMW’s Motorsport Division began to get a bit of flack from traditional M drivers, who felt that the latest generation M cars (back in 2005) were becoming too safe, too controlled, with a surfeit of driver aids and creature comforts, the decision was made to prove a point by producing this no holds barred, raw two-seater monster. Building on the cult following formed around its predecessor, the fabulously querky Z3M coupe (or simply M coupe, to give it the proper label) the Z4 M coupe promised to be a more serious, thought-through affair, and became the first in a now established line of Z4s. Transplanting the world beating 3.2 straight six S54 from the then current M3, this time BMW were able to squeeze the full potential from the engine and by mating it with a tauter, lighter more focused chassis produced a car that would silence all their critics. The S54 engine is now acknowledged by many as being one of the greatest six cylinder engines ever produced.
Ultimately BMW chose to limit production to just over a 1,000 of these little gems. Munich’s pocket rocket certainly has no frills, but still retains a high level of comfort and a good spec, despite having one eye on weight. This car has only covered 54,000 miles throughout its lifetime and has been well looked after by all of its (seven) previous keepers. It certainly isn’t unusual to see high numbers of owners on these cars, being a popular choice for a weekend/second car, at the same time as being fairly untamed – and not particularly family friendly. The recommended service schedule for this Z has been respected and carried out exactly in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines. The Munich Legends technical team have given the car a thorough appraisal and a clean bill of health.
Prices for Z4M coupes have risen steadily and the low number produced coupled with the timeless design and back to basics characteristics make for both great investment potential and a hugely pleasurable ownership experience.
