The BMW M coupe, or Z3M coupe, as its most commonly referred to, is one of the rarest and most quirky M cars. It was famously put together more as a skunk works car than a full production model, using mostly bits from other production M cars to keep the costs down and ease production. But rather than creating Frankenstein monster, the outcome was one of the coolest, most individual cars BMW have ever made. The main production run, from 98-00 featured the S50 engine from the outgoing E36 M3, and it was quick, if a tad demanding. But perhaps they ran out of S50 lumps, or maybe someone had one schnapps too many – either way the last run of M coupes got the brand-new engine from the soon-to-be world beating E46 M3, the S54. This wonderful straight six 3.2 may not look hugely different on paper from its predecessor, but on paper isn’t where the action is. On the road the two power plants are chalk and cheese – a generation apart in terms of pull, response, and raw power. Only 164 M coupes got the S54 engine before production ended for good. This Z3M is one of them.
In terms of rareness, an S54 in Imola red really is the daddy. This beautiful machine has lived much of its life on the Isle of Wight, not doing many miles, and being looked after by the same owner for X years. It’s pretty unusual to find a Z3 with such modest travel on the odometer, and with so few owners. The condition of the car is as you would expect from one that has covered so few miles, having been inspected thoroughly by our technical team.
