Quite some claim, but back in 1998 BMW were confident enough of their prowess to commission a series of net-only based adverts reinforcing their place as the most exciting and innovative mainstream performance car maker in the world. Banned from showing people driving even vaguely enthusiastically on the telly (all car makers), BMW decided to splash out on a now famous series of ads involving the likes of Clive Owen, James Brown, Madonna and Guy Richie. The E39 5 series is one of those cars that people just love. The number of our customers – who certainly have the means to buy a brand new 5 series – that simply will not give up their 250,000+ mile 5er, despite its age, bears testament to the fact that BMW have arguably never matched the E39 for sheer ownership pleasure. Acres of glass, but modern and safe, a clear, open, welcoming cabin, a supreme chassis – and simply a lovely car to drive. The M5 takes that platform and delivers one of the most beguiling and characterful drives of any M car. Somehow BMW managed to combine the feeling of a muscle car – V8 torque and almost laughably responsive throttle – with state of the art (in 2000) technology such as fly-by-wire and VANOS, to deliver a machine that will have you addicted on your first drive.
Used for years as the Nurburgring taxi, and adored by anyone who’s been lucky enough to own one, most E39 M5s have covered monster miles. Finding one with sensible odometer readings is now the main challenge. Ongoing maintenance is essential for these high-tec beasts, and the difference between one that has been well maintained and one that has been neglected is usually glaringly obvious, but a vital judgement to make. Our technicians still look after a good number of E39 M5s in daily use, and have huge experience of these gems – as well as listing them in the top three of ‘favourite Ms’ to a man.
Old enough to be classic, but new enough to boast high levels of modern spec, the 5.0 litre V8 even delivers half decent fuel economy – certainly much better than its successor, the V10 M5. So if you are looking for a car that is super fast – even by today’s standards – has bags of character, room for a family of four and their luggage, and to top it all good investment potential, then look no further.
Serviced impeccably by the dealer network or ourselves, this particular facelift M5 is quite possibly one of the best M5s we have seen, especially given its 100k miles on the clock. It looks more like a well maintained 50k miler. We’ve inspected this cracking car rigorously and the hit list is ridiculously small (tyre inflation kit, fuel filler cap, that sort of thing). There’s not much more to say, other than that we’d all like to own this car.
