Just once in a blue moon, a car like this comes along. BMW sold a lot of the E24 635csi – its smooth combination of power, style, and practicality made it a smash hit. But over the years, the cost of keeping these cars in good condition spiralled up, as the values spiralled downwards. The result is that there are surprisingly few that remain in true original condition, or at least remain the sort of car you’d want to own. But this particular E24 635 is exceptional.
Supplied new to its first owner on Jersey, by local BMW dealer Jacksons on 21 August 85, the car never left the island and barely covered any distance (it’s difficult to rack up many miles on an island of only 45 square miles). In 1991, Mr and Mrs S spotted it for sale in Jacksons’ showroom and immediately fell in love. A BMW 635csi was an expensive car in those days, but they decided to treat themselves. They bought this lovely machine as a second car, becoming the second owners, and planned to keep it forever – a treat for them to enjoy when they retired and had the time to go touring. They cared for the car and treasured it, moving it to the UK when they came to the mainland to live. Over the years it has been fastidiously cossetted, SORNed for the winter months, garaged at all times and only driven on high days and holidays. It has only covered just over 20,000 miles in all this time. Unbelievably, in all 35-odd years of ownership, it has never had a drop of paint. We’ve checked it with a paint gauge, and the readings are consistent with original factory levels. We’ve known the car for years, and have always admired the owners for their caring approach to their pride and joy. We can’t buy every great car we see, but if we could, we’d certainly buy this one, without a moment’s hesitation!
As John Lennon once said, life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. Unfortunately, as Mr & Mrs S approached the very time when they planned to enjoy the car, Mr S became ill, and unable to drive. We were asked to store the car while this lovely couple decided what to do, but after much heart searching and emotional deliberation, they have decided that the car should now go to someone who is able to enjoy and cherish this beautiful machine, and so we have been asked to find the right new owner.
Entering this car is truly like stepping back in time. The smell, the feel of the interior, the creaminess of the engine, the gear change – even the brakes are efficient and feel new. There are no funny noises or wobbles, just driving perfection.
The paintwork looks fabulous, the interior is near perfect, the engine runs beautifully. One of the few remaining affordable ‘true classics’, 635csi values are still, for the time being, incredibly low for what is a fast, stylish, comfy shark nose from BMW’s purple patch. Nothing else out there matches a 635csi for under £30,000.
