Jay Collects his CSL

Long standing Munich Legends customer Jay Kay, lead singer of acid jazz band Jamiroquai, made a visit to our Chelwood Gate HQ last week to collect his fully restored E9 3.0 CSL.

The car was purchased by Jay and delivered to us earlier in the year with instruction to fully strip the vehicle, acid dip and e coat the shell then restore the car to his specification which included spraying the vehicle in Polaris Silver, adding a pair of striking Wing Splitters, upgrading the headlights with HID’s and fully rebuilding the engine.

This was the first project carried out in our newly refurbished Restoration Workshop and one that everybody here has enjoyed being a part of.

BMW News Autumn 2010

New 6 Series Coupe and Convertible

Although the Coupe debuted in September at the Paris Motor Show this isn’t planned to go on sale a year later in September 2011 whilst the Convertible, which has yet to premier (planned for Detroit in January) will go on sale in time for the new registration date in March 2011.

Slightly longer and wider than the outgoing model the Convertible F13 model, will also provide greater levels of not only driver, but also passenger comfort, by offering much improved leg, head and shoulder room in the back as well as in the cockpit up-front.

Engine wise there will be a choice of two from launch with customers choosing between either the entry level 640i, fitted with a 3.0-litre, turbocharged straight six, producing 320bhp and 332lb ft of torque. The other option is a 650i which will run a 4.4 litre, turbocharged V8 pumping out 407bhp and 443lb ft of torque. Both engines will be fitted with BMW’s eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Estimated figures of 35mpg for the 640i and 26mpg for the 650i have been quoted by BMW which will be truly staggering if proven to be correct and proof that you needn’t compromise poor fuel economy for impressive performance.

Munich Legends web-site hits goes Platinum

This time last year we reported our web-site had recorded 380,000 ‘hits’ in October. As impressive as we thought this was at the time we now realise that was only the tip of our popularity iceberg.
One year down the line and aided by the launch of our Specialist Parts section as well as some stunning vehicles we have had and continue to offer the web-site this figure has increased by 189% to 1.1 MILLION ‘hits’ in October this year.

We are humbled and proud of our existing customer’s loyalty and excited by the prospect of attracting  new customers in the future.

BMW News July 2010

The New BMW X3

BMW have announced the introduction of the second generation X3 model into their range of already successful Sports Activity Vehicles.
Since the X3’s original release in 2003 it has proven to be the class leader in the compact SAV sector and BMW expect the new model to carry on this trend.

The new model will originally wear the xDrive20d badge, signifying the 2.0-litre turbocharged power plant under the bonnet with plans to include other engines into the range at a later date.
The X3 xDrive20d is expected to account for around 80% of all new X3 sales in the UK and with combined mpg of 50.4 and CO2 emissions of only 149g/km there is substance behind this decision.

Although available as standard with a manual transmission the new X3 xDrive20d will be also be available with an optional eight speed automatic transmission. Rather astoundingly for an automatic this will keep combined mpg at the same figure as that of a manual and decrease CO2 emissions to just 147g/km due to BMW’s Auto Start-Stop technology already familiar to drivers of the 1 and 3 Series, as well as MINI; however this is the first time it will be used on an automatic.

The level of standard equipment on offer also increases in the second generation X3 with iDrive, front and rear PDC sensors, 17” Alloys and Nevada leather interior now available at no extra cost to the buyer. Despite the rise in standard equipment and quality of materials the X3 xDrive20d SE is actually £115 less than the outgoing model, coming in at £30,490 OTR.

MINI WRC announcement imminent

MINI is this week expected to announce their intent to join the World Rally Championship for the 2011 season, a report by Autosport claims.

A MINI/Prodrive collaboration has been rumoured since last year but this will be the first official announcement outlining their intentions.

Based on the new MINI Countryman, the vehicle will be powered by the 1.6 turbo charged engine already found in the latest generation MINI.

Due to time constraints it is unlikely the car will be ready for the season’s opening round in Sweden on the 13th February but sources claim the new partnership could debut at the Italian round of the Championship on 8th May.
1 Series M Coupe

It seems BMW’s M division, BMW M GmbH, have been extremely busy in the last year since Dr Kay Segler was appointed CEO. First there was the announcement of the 450 bhp M3 GTS, BMW’s attempt at the ever growing trend of a stripped out road racer. Then in an interview with m-power.com, Dr Segler talked about the development of the F10 generation, twin turbo M5.  Now, at the other end of the spectrum comes the news of BMW’s most affordable ever M car, the 1 Series M Coupe.

Named as such to leave the door open for the return of 80’s Legend the M1, the 1 Series M Coupe is set to be focused on the fascination of driving and has been earmarked as a spiritual successor to the iconic E30 M3.

The 1 Series M Coupe is rumoured to become the first ever turbo-charged M car, borrowing its power-plant from the 135i and Z435i sDrive. It will however benefit from an increase of around 50bhp, taking the figure to around 350bhp and will be offered with both a six speed manual transmission as well as the exceptional seven speed DCT box that debuted in the E93 M3. Trademark handling will, as ever, be what sets the 1 Series M apart from its competition. A modified version of the M3’s M differential will help keep the rear wheels in order, coupled with a lower ride height and wider tracks; this could be where the comparisons with the E30 M3 really start to become noticed.

Launching at the Detroit motor show in January and available to the public not long after the 1 Series M Coupe is expected to cost around £35,000 offering seemingly good value for an M product.
What is DCT?

The Double Clutch Transmission DCT was first installed in the E93 M3. This transmission is very similar the SMG gearbox with one vital difference, there are now two clutch plates.

The clutch plates are attached to two input shafts as opposed to one in an SMG box. This enables the highly sophisticated control unit to pre-select the next gear whilst still driving the vehicle. When a gear change is required one clutch is disengaged and the other engages to the pre selected gear providing a constant power source to the rear wheels eliminating the jerking familiar to owners of previous SMG M cars.

Offering 5 shift programmes in the fully automatic mode and six in manual mode, these are also supplemented by a selectable Launch Control programme which provides a spectacle ending in a cloud of tyre smoke and a claimed 0-60mph time of less than 4 seconds!

Munich Legends launch open new dedicated restoration facilities

Munich Legends are proud to announce the opening of a new dedicated restoration facility at the Ashdown Garage, home of Munich Legends for nearly 20 years. The Restoration of some beautiful Legends is already underway in the new facility, such as a superb 3.0 CSL undergoing a full bare metal respray, total mechanical and interior overhaul, and a cherished 2002 being carefully returned to road going condition.

Veteran Munich Legends mechanic Mick Hope shares his colleagues’ enthusiasm for the new facilities “we are all genuinely excited to be more involved than ever before in the restoration side of the business. Last week I worked on a 2002 that would have been serviced here as a new car when I did my BMW apprenticeship in 1968. Maybe it even went on my ramp. It is a real pleasure to be putting these classic Legends back to their original glory.”

The decision was taken to provide dedicated facilities for restoration work as the volume of interest has increased dramatically over the last year. General Manager Stuart Draper sees this as a natural progression for the company. “As we get more and more people asking us to work on their cherished Legends, we wanted to take this work out of the main workshops into a controlled environment where each individual car can be worked on away from the daily hustle and bustle of the service centre facility. Individual components can be laid out without risk of them getting in the way, owners can visit to see the progress of their project and some customers have even asked us to provide stage by stage photographs of their project for posterity. We are also using the new space to build track and race cars for special order customers. All this is so much easier now.”

The new facility is also better suited to press events, as a perfect combination of showroom and workshop. For all enquiries related to restoration work, track day and race car preparation or any other special projects, contact Stuart on 01825 741 161.

Munich Legends appoints Andy Pulford as Parts Manager

The management are pleased to announce the appointment of the new Parts Manager at Munich Legends. Andy Pulford joins Munich from a local main dealer where he consistently achieved top performance figures during his 6 year tenure. His valuable experience in the BMW dealer network will add to the training available from the Munich team on the more esoteric items sourced from outside of the BMW UK network.

General Manager Stuart Draper was Munich Legends’ Parts Manager for nearly ten years and is looking forward to passing his hard learnt knowledge onto his successor. “This gives us a real edge on our competitors”, says Draper.”Not only do we have access to parts not found in the main dealer network, but we also now have the inside track on OEM parts more than ever before. This should make us pretty unbeatable”.

MINI Legends Launch

Munich Legends have now officially launched their MINI Division, MINI Legends. Founded on the same principles that helped Munich Legends take the BMW world by storm nearly 20 years ago, MINI Legends already has a large following. The MINI team has already found some very individual MINIs to sell through the dedicated MINI showroom, such as a 220bhp fully prepared 2 seater Cooper S and a stunning pair of individually spec’d Cooper works models
