The Z1 may indeed be BMW’s most remarkable car. Resembling, even today, a futuristic prototype rather than a full-blown production model – and one that is now more than 25 years old – the Z1 continues to fascinate and excite drivers all over the world. With its mechanically retracting doors – which can be left down whilst you drive, giving a fabulous feeling of the open road – convertible roof and sporty interior, there really is nothing like the Z1 for a clear expression of individuality and fun.

One of the many reasons for the Z1’s enduring appeal is the 2.5 litre six-cylinder M20 power plant, also found in the world beating E30 325i. It could be said that along with its larger sibling, the (also six cylinder) M30 engine, the M20 helped establish BMW’s global reputation during their 80’s and 90’s purple patch, without which they would not be the world-dominating force that they are today. Solid, fast and reliable, with smooth power delivery and easy road manners, the M20 is without doubt one of the greatest engines of its era.

Given the reinforcement requirements of a convertible, the Z1 is surprisingly light – weighing in at a relatively slender 1250kg – and this adds to the sprightly feel of the drive. The lighter weight is due to the use of plastic body panels – an innovation only made possible by advances in technology available at the time – which BMW claimed could be removed in just 40 minutes and changed for another colour at will. The reality is far removed from this claim, but having removed the panels, the car can be driven as a panel-less shell. Why anyone would want to do this remains unclear…

Z1s have been growing in popularity sharply in recent years, and values have risen in line with demand. Many Z1s lack substantial history, and many have mileage discrepancies due to a common fault with odometers, combined with the fact that many have travelled from Europe and have undergone KMS-MPH conversions. However, this does not seem to affect people’s hunger for what is surely one of the most unusual and left-field automotive creations of its generation. BMW would not make a car as ‘different’ as the Z1 until the revolutionary i8, some 20 plus years later. By then the Z1 had become a true modern classic, and a vital piece in the jigsaw of BMW’s development as a world-beating and innovative marque.

This particular Z1 has been owned for many years by a true enthusiast. The comprehensive service history bears testament to a car that has always had the ‘right’ sort of owners, with a reassuringly stamped service book and lots of accompanying bills and MOTs etc. The car was originally supplied to BMW Brive, in western France, but came to the UK within two years, in the early 90’s. The mileage progression leads us to believe that it may have been supplied from new with an MPH clock. Looked after by ourselves during its current ownership time, this pretty car has been serviced and maintained correctly, including the all-important cambelt changes. The car has been thoroughly inspected by our workshop team and will be supplied to the next lucky keeper with a brand new MOT and in excellent mechanical order.
