The 1M coupe was an instant hit upon its launch. Nobody can argue with the 1M’s devastating good looks, or be in any doubt about the car’s intentions. It wants to go fast. Really fast. Released in limited numbers as a run out model of the original 1 series (450 examples in RHD) the 1M sold slowly to begin with, despite its half sensible price. Only when Top Gear released Jeremy Clarkson’s fab review did BMW sell every car it had available – overnight. And its not hard to see why. The 1M was sold in a choice of 3 colours – Valencia orange, black and white – and with a subtle but sporty interior trimmed with orange stitching and boasting plenty of toys. The seats are super comfy but perfect for spirited driving, the driving position sublime, and the cabin is well laid out, giving you that feeling of the car folding around you as you master this 340bhp hooligan machine. The 1M may be a very fast car indeed – more than capable of keeping up with pretty much anything on the road – but its also remarkably easy to live with as a daily driver. Set the car to the standard settings and it becomes a docile, friendly machine to potter around town in, or to the local supermarket. Switch to M mode and all hell breaks loose. Few other cars are so versatile and usable.
This particular 1M is the perfect car for either those who wish to use it as a daily driver – it doesn’t carry the price premium of some of the lower mileage examples available – or for a collector, looking to keep the car long term, perhaps with a view to increasing values, being well below the 50,000 mile marker. The 1M has been a particularly interesting car to follow as a model, values wise. Launched at a time when classic car culture was on the rise, this pocket rocket was immediately hailed a modern classic by critics and owners alike. Only for a very short time did values drop below the new price, before beginning the steady rise upwards – a pattern almost never seen before or since. Now, with many 1Ms crashed or trashed – or parked up in collections never to be seen again – the 1M is a rare sight on the road. Fewer and fewer good cars are being presented to market at a sensible price, making this example very exciting indeed.
