BMW came of age in the 1980s, and the lion’s share of the credit for the company’s meteoric rise must surely go to the E30 3 series. The quad light and classic narrow kidney grill configuration is without doubt the most iconic ‘look’ that the company has ever produced. But only today is it so clear just how good that model was – largely due to how well they drive in comparison to modern cars. There are three models that any true driving enthusiast should have on their shortlist – the M3 (of course), the 325i sport coupe, and the 325i convertible. Whilst the M3 and 325i coupe versions have the advantage of a more rigid chassis, the cabriolet has the indisputable edge on style. What will surprise most drivers though, is just how good the drop top E30 feels on the road, especially given that the E30 is now a bona fide classic car. With very little scuttle shake, a lively but smooth straight six 2.5 litre engine and excellent road manners, the 325i convertible is a true delight to drive. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but take a minute to consider the E30’s contemporaries. Who would have guessed, for example, back in 1988, that the Mercedes SL – of Beverly Hills Cop fame – a car with a comparatively huge price tag, would look so dated, so inelegant, thirty years on. The E30 looks fresh, sporty, and so iconic, and not to put too fine a point on it, at a very affordable price.

We won’t harp on about investment opportunities, or fast appreciating values, but its not hard to spot how much value for money the E30 325i cabriolet represents compared to most other 80s classics.

This particular 325i drop top is well known to us. The colour combination is just right, the condition overall is excellent, the history and provenance is spot on, and it drives like a dream – this car is one of our favourites. Bought from us four years ago, the current owner has found very little time to enjoy his acquisition, which has been carefully stored during its time with him. The light grey and checker cloth upholstery is in superb condition, the dash and centre console are in top condition with no damage – the interior has a feel of smart, understated elegance. The roof is undamaged and shows no sign of wear or rubbing, the rear ‘window’ plastic is clear and shows no staining or delamination. All round, the paintwork is in very good condition, the wheels are unmarked and the spoilers and trim are straight, showing no signs of warping – a common issue with these kits. Mechanically the car is A1, the bullet proof M20 feels just like it should, pulling effortlessly and smoothly. The auto box, which is perfect for cool cruising with the wind in your hair, changes with ease and without jerking or hesitation. The brakes are exactly right, pulling you to a halt straight and with ease, and the overall road manners of the car give it an expensive, refined feel. All in all, this car is in very pleasing condition, as is immediately obvious upon first viewing.

Our technical team have carried out the usual rigorous inspection, mechanically, cosmetically, and generally, the few items identified as in need of attention will make the car very easy for us to prep for the next owner.
